What To Know About Skylight Security

No matter which neighborhood you lived in or how long you lived in Cincinnati, you care about the security of your home and the privacy of your family. Skylights are large windows installed on the roof that help you take advantage of the natural light outside. There are tons of skylight benefits that you can enjoy every day. Whether you already have a skylight or you plan to install one, make sure you know how to secure it.

Which type of glass is best?

One thing to consider is the type of glass used in the skylight as some are more secure than others. Those made from ordinary glass are not very strong. Hail and tree branches can break through the glass during storms or when there's a lot of wind. Tempered glass is much stronger. Instead of breaking into lots of little shards, the glass sticks together when it breaks. It should stay in the window frame, too. Most skylights use laminated glass with tempered glass to create a stronger combo.

How many panes are there?

The most secure skylights consist of multiple panes of glass. They have a frame around the sides with smaller panes of glass in the center. With a standard or traditional skylight, you have just one large piece of glass inside the frame. Manufacturers began making skylights from multiple panes as they realized that these windows offered more security. A burglar who gets on your roof can easily break a single pane and gain access to your home. With multiple panes, they don't have any way inside. You don't need to worry about possibly crashing through the window when you clean your roof or do a quick repair, either.

What security features can you add?

Adding a security system is just one way to keep your home safe. Consider adding other security features that protect your home and protect your skylight. One option is a fall protection screen. The screen has a curved shape and sits on top of the skylight. While it won't block out the sun, it will keep you and others from falling through the glass

Security bars work just as well and are a nice addition to traditional skylights. Similar to the bars that you see on other windows, these metal bars block anyone from getting into your home. Many can even fit between the glass and any cover that you place on top of it. Working with a local window company is the best way to install these security features and any new skylights you want. Consider working with Anderson or Gilkey, both of which operate in the Cincinnati area.

You can enjoy all of the benefits of a skylight without worrying about your family's safety. Make sure that you pick the right type of glass. Look for skylights with multiple panes of glass and/or add new security features for more protection.
